As someone who spends a lot of time picking up turds and hanging out with my “fur baby” I feel personally attacked 😂 This was so insightful though that I’m choosing to be less offended.
I definitely see what you’re saying. There are more dogs in my family than children and we all use our dogs as an excuse to leave gatherings early or get out of them altogether.
A huge contributor to people choosing to have dogs over children is also costs of child rearing, lack of time in expensive cities where hustling constantly is needed to get by, and people struggling to build foundational relationships in a society where dating culture is becoming increasingly casual.
Totally agree with you. Imagine spending a thousand dollars to clone a dog yet someone you know can't even afford a meal. Even ethical attention is shifting.
I think this accidentally becomes an argument about anything about which people say, "But it brings me so much joy."
If it is a fixation, taking more time and/or money than the important people in your life, it is a cope. It will eventually cause a deficit.
I grew up in an American subculture in which the children/family relationships were absolutely more important than the animals. Animals were a big part of life, but they served us. Not the other way around.
So, I think it all comes down to priority/mindset.

You’re from San Diego like me so you know exactly what I’m talking about…
Hahaha thanks for reading. This one hurt a bit to write.
