Like calling oneself Genius it loses any meaning once you say it yourself or wear it on a t-shirt. Steve Jobs was called a genius but doubt he’s ever proclaimed that himself. IMO self-describing yourself in a grandiose way is self defeating due to the fact that it sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself of it in addition to others. But I digress. One isn’t self-made, virtually no one is independent, even lone wolves need other animals to feed itself. On the flip side these are just the idiosyncrasies of the English language. I did. but I think those odds are based on general factors that could prevent someone from being born. and i think each person also has a unique chain of circumstances behind their existence—different choices, encounters, timings, and events that had to align perfectly. When you factor in all those individual variables, it becomes almost impossible to calculate the true odds of any specific person being born. that's what i think
But it's a fascinating description. i think even all the personal factors that i have mentioned have been captured in the article. it's a good food for thought. it just kept me thinking, really.
Love this. Reminds me of the old watchmaker parable. if someone found a Timex in a cave, would he assume it made itself? Of course not. There must be a watchmaker. Same with a person. ‘Self-made’ skips the Maker and all of the steps you mentioned.
Agreed. Self-made is fake. We all depend on someone before we’re born. Our mother and father conceived us. But even before that, God is the reason for everything.
Pride is a dangerous thing that has many of us blinded. Instead of feeding our ego through pride, we must be thankful for everything and everyone we have. None of us would be where we are without others.

What are the odds of me being born? i don't really know. and i don't think i will ever know. gratitude is indeed all that i can do.
I actually have a stat within the essay that gives you the odds of being born. It's basically incomprehensible, but it is interesting.
